“Reducing maternal and infant mortality in Kigoma (Tanzania): incubators and safe blood”
At KARIBIA, we are very aware of the serious maternal and child health situation facing the Kigoma region. Therefore, we decided to take action. Faced with the high maternal and newborn mortality rates, we launched the project "Reducing Maternal and Infant Mortality in Kigoma: Incubators and Safe Blood," in collaboration with local health authorities.
With this initiative, we aim to improve the health of mothers and babies in line with the guidelines of the Tanzanian government, the World Health Organization (WHO), and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In Tanzania, more than 213,000 premature babies are born each year, and in Kigoma, with more than 2.4 million inhabitants and only four incubators available, at least 12,600 newborns do not receive the care they need to survive or develop without consequences.
Furthermore, Kigoma accounts for nearly 5.8% of all maternal deaths in the country, with obstetric hemorrhage being the leading cause (56%), followed by anemia during pregnancy (6%).
Faced with this reality, at KARIBIA we are equipping health centers with In3ator portable incubators, suitable for rural settings, and actively supporting Blood Bank campaigns, which are essential for ensuring safe transfusions during births.
Our goal is clear: to save lives, support the local health system, and contribute, through our practice, to achieving the SDGs related to health and well-being. Because every mother and every baby deserves to begin their story with dignity, care, and hope.
